Meet The Team

Dr Leonard Onwumelu moved to Canada in November 2015 where he currently lives with his family.  He is the clinical director of the Deer Ridge Family Clinic, he works with a health care team consisting of a group of doctors, resident doctors from the University of Calgary and a group of nurses; both from Deer Ridge Family Clinic and Alberta Health.  He is also the Medical Doctor in several nursing homes across Calgary and attends the nursing homes once a week with the company of the resident doctors and the nurses.

Dr. Rick graduated from the University of Calgary medical school in 1980 and subsequently qualified as
both a family physician and an emergency physician.

He started his private practice in December 1983 in
Queensland and moved his office to Deer Run in 1990.

He transitioned from delivering babies to
focusing on occupational medicine in the mid-1990s and subsequently worked as a part-time company
physician in addition to being a family physician until he sold his practice to Dr. Onwumelu for one dollar
2017. His goal was to thank his long-term patients by providing them with an experienced doctor who
was comfortable with providing the expertise needed regarding their complex medical needs.

Dr. Zabrodski, a clinical assistant professor for the past 40 years, continues to teach part-time at the medical school and also does some occupational consulting while filling in as needed as a long-term locum at the Deer Ridge Family Clinic.

Dr. Opeyemi Familusi recently moved to Calgary and joined Deer Ridge Family Medicine Clinic with 15 years of experience in Family Medicine from the United Kingdom. 

She is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary and comes from a diverse background of working as a family physician in both rural and densely populated
localities across the United Kingdom.

She has a special interest in Women's Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Children’s Health, and has acquired vast experience in these patient populations. She takes special pride in getting to know her patients and helping them to achieve their physical and emotional wellness goals by adopting an individualized, collaborative approach to their care.

After graduating from the University of Ibadan Medical School, Dr Familusi moved to the United Kingdom where she completed her internship at the Arrowe Park Hospital (Wirral University Teaching Hospitals), Merseyside in the United Kingdom.
She subsequently moved to the Midlands to complete her Family Medicine training program under the East Midlands Deanery University of Nottingham. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom and a board-certified physician with CCFP certification in Canada. She also holds a Diploma in Child Health from the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health in the United Kingdom, a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, United Kingdom and a Diploma in Family and Reproductive Health.

In addition to her vast experience in clinical practice, Dr. Familusi also has a strong background in public health. She is a graduate of the prestigious Global Health Delivery Intensive course at Harvard University, United States. 

When Dr. Familusi is not seeing patients, she enjoys traveling, singing and cooking.

She will also be handling WCB patients, Immunization, Contraception and Driver's Medicals. She is a great addition to the team at Deer Ridge Family Clinic.​​​

Dr Prisca Wosu has over fifteen years’ experience as a medical practitioner. She is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners of the United Kingdom and holds a Certification in the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) in Canada.

Dr Wosu commenced her medical training at the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria. She then went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Tropical Medicine and International Health(TMIH) from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Dr Prisca also obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene(DTM&H) from LSHTM/Royal College of Physicians of London. She then proceeded to complete her Family Medicine residency training in West Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom.

Dr Wosu has a keen interest in elderly care and has worked in several nursing homes both in the United Kingdom and Canada. She has vast knowledge in chronic disease management and believes in patient centred care. She is passionate about women and child health and her passion is evident in her empathetic nature

Dr Wosu lives with her husband and two children. She has a large family, being the first of twelve children. Dr Prisca loves spending time with family and friends, traveling and watching movies.

Dr. Chester Onuorah is a highly dedicated and compassionate family physician with extensive experience in delivering high-quality, patient-focused care. 

He is a proud member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) and holds certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Dr. Onuorah earned his medical degree from the College of Medical Sciences, Ebonyi State University, Nigeria, and completed his family medicine residency in Lancaster, United Kingdom. His training and professional journey have equipped him with exceptional clinical and interpersonal skills, enabling him to provide care that meets the diverse needs of his patients.

With a keen interest in geriatric and palliative medicine, mental health, and child and adolescent health, Dr. Onuorah is committed to staying at the forefront of medical advancements and implementing evidence-based practices in his patient care delivery.

Beyond his professional life,

Dr. Onuorah enjoys spending quality time with family and friends. An avid sports enthusiast, he actively participates in soccer, badminton, and lawn tennis.

Dr. Gabriel Olaiya joins Deer Ridge Family Practice with over 13 years of medical experience as a physician in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Olaiya completed his medical degree at the prestigious University of Manchester, followed by junior doctor training in Merseyside. He gained extensive experience in various specialties, including accident and emergency, general medicine, psychiatry, and cardiology. Throughout his training, Dr. Olaiya has consistently prioritized excellent patient care and communication, which remain central to his current practice.

After completing his foundation training, he pursued a year of focused work in psychiatry and rehabilitation medicine, two areas of particular interest to him, before settling in Hertfordshire to complete his General Practice (GP) training.
During this training, Dr. Olaiya furthered his knowledge in paediatrics, women’s health, and elder care, leading him to obtain additional qualifications:
•    Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
•    Diploma in Child Health
•    Diploma in Geriatric Medicine
His diploma in geriatrics broadened his understanding of elder care, particularly in pharmacology and the social factors affecting community care.

Dr. Olaiya’s general practice training also included rotations in paediatrics, stroke medicine, and palliative care. During his time in palliative care, he earned the European Certificate in Palliative Care (ECPC), demonstrating his expertise in providing compassionate care for patients with complex and terminal illnesses.

He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) in the UK and holds a Certification in the College of Family Physicians (CCFP) in Canada.

After qualifying Dr. Olaiya expanded his scope of practice by completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Obesity and Weight Management at the University of South Wales. He later founded and worked at the London Weight Loss Clinic on London’s famous Harley Street, supporting patients in achieving healthier lifestyles.

Dr. Olaiya has moved to Calgary with his young family and is excited to bring his enthusiasm, experience, and dedication to the Deer Ridge community, providing ongoing care and support.
Outside of work, Dr. Olaiya enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He is an avid hill walker and gym enthusiast.​​

Originally from the Philippines and doing previous work as a Health Care Aide, Rosemarie graduated from Bow Valley College's LPN program in 2017 and has worked for Dr. Leonard since graduation.  She specializes in geriatric and advanced foot care. Rosemarie is a staple in the Deer Ridge Family Clinic and is always ready to greet patients with a smile.

Rosie is a trained foot-care specialist nurse that offers home visits for foot care related cases.

​

Rosie is currently accepting private patients who are over 65 and covered by Alberta Blue Cross for foot care in the clinic.  Services include:

My Name is Theodora. I am Dr Leonard’s wife. I am a Lawyer; licensed to practice both in Nigeria and Alberta.

I moved to Canada from the UK in August 2015 and shortly after, I met all the requirements to practice in Canada as required by the National Committee on
Accreditation, Ottawa. I articled in a reputable Law firm in Calgary and subsequently got admitted to the Alberta Bar in June 2019.

I practice in the areas of Family Law, Wills & Estate, and Notary Public.

I offer legal services to Deer Ridge patients at a discounted
rate due to my affiliation to the clinic. I also work with Legal Aid clients requiring services in the area of Family Law.

I completed my Bachelors Degree in Law at the University of Nigeria and proceeded to Nigerian Law School, Lagos. I relocated to Ireland in 2002, and on getting to Ireland; there was no pathway at the time for internationally trained lawyers to practice law. I had a change of career, and got admitted into Dublin City University, Ireland, for a degree programme in Nursing. I graduated with a B.sc (Nursing) in 2009, with special interest in Learning Disability.

I also attended the Dublin Business School where I got a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA).

I am a member of the Calgary Bar Association, and a Member of Immigration and Refugee Board of Alberta.

I enjoy travelling, cooking and reading novels at my spare time.​​​
